Terracotta
Cretan Pots

Equally at home in both traditional and contemporary gardens, our exquisite range of hand thrown Cretan terracotta pots feature the sensual styles and unique colouration achieved by the islands ancient Minoan potters.

Tied up in over 4000 years of history, the pots and urns owe their distinctive pale appearance to firing the kilns in the traditional way using olive stones. Fired to over 1150°C the finished article is able to withstand the harshest of winters.

Cretan Urns

Both eye-catching and imposing it is the ornamental urns that have the strongest link with the islands Minoan tradition, as it is these items that replicate the large storage pots of ancient Greece.

With the production method untouched by change, each item is individually crafted on a wooden wheel using the ‘coil’ method, a rare skill requiring a high level of experience. Made in 7 inch stages, which are left to dry prior to adding another coil of clay, production is a pain staking process taking up to 5 days to complete. Crete is in fact the only island where large clay pots are still made using this traditional method.
